Have you stocked your dad's bathroom cabinet with a lifetime supply of boutique shaving creams and razors? It's time to mix things up with our GIFT GUIDE. For the next week, we'll be chatting with some of our favorite dads and their kids. First, we meet 'n' greet August Heffner, the co-founder of Kindling Quarterly, a new publication from Brooklyn that focuses on all things dad.

Describe your most memorable Father’s Day with your dad: While living in St. Louis, MO we went to see the Cardinals. I was four years old and the Cardinals' theme song was "The Heat Is On" (which is also the theme for Beverly Hills Cop). One of my earliest memories was that song coming on the radio on our way to the game; we were in a convertible. I think it was the first (and last) time I ever felt "cool."

Describe your most memorable Father’s Day with your son, Phoenix: This weekend will be our second Father's Day—my son is only 18 months. We plan to be on vacation in Maine with fellow Kindling co-founder David Michael Perez (and his family). I'm getting my hopes up for the best Father's Day ever.

Favorite things to do with your dad: My dad passed away when I was a teen, so I missed a lot of the stuff you do with your dad as an adult. We had good times though (see baseball games/convertible times above!).

Favorite things to do with Phoenix: Right now, he loves doing the dishes. He stands on a step stool and "helps" me do them. It's pretty fun to prepare food with him, but it's a mess!

What’s the one thing your dad always said and was right about? He told me that I had to like myself before I'd be any use to anyone else. As in, You can't help people or make them happy if you aren't happy with yourself. I still believe this is very true.

What’s the one thing your dad always said and was wrong about? I can't remember him being wrong about anything, but if he were alive I'm sure we'd butt heads about quite a few things!

Favorite item from your dad's wardrobe: My dad ran an antique store and while he wasn't rich, he rocked some pretty cool jewelry, including an antique Rolex. I'm yet to build the confidence to wear it, but I will.

Favorite meal your dad cooked: My dad could grill. I now live in Brooklyn without a backyard. I'm hoping to gain these skills someday.

Favorite fictional movie dad: We've found, through interviews in Kindling Quarterly issue two, that Atticus Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird is the all-time greatest dad.

Items you are hoping to receive for Father’s Day? Anything from Band of Outsiders. Also, I'm obsessed with a co-worker's Sidian, Ersatz & Vanes shirt, as a designer myself (not of clothing!), I'm entranced by an insanely perfect colorblock.
