Last month, Shawana, Elin and I spent a cold and snowy weekend in Copenhagen, a city full of beautiful people and modernist design. The negative-degree temperatures were bearable thanks to the clear blue skies, so we bundled up and set out to explore all that the city has to offer. We ate, drank, and shopped (or rather, browsed––the Danish capital is pretty pricey), and also managed to make a couple of excursions out of the city. Here are some of our favorite places!
EAT
Cafe Granola, Værnedamsvej 5, 1819 Map - The perfect place to start the day, Cafe Granola offers a great brunch (try the pancake and cinnamon toast) and fresh-squeezed juices. The 1950s interior is equally as appealing with industrial lighting, vintage enamel signs, and teak counters.
Fortunen Bar & Spiseri, Ved Stranden 18, 1061 Map - The small plates are affordable and perfect for sharing. We especially loved the crab-and-coriander slider and the homemade bread with whipped herb butter––delicious! The bar staff are pretty cute too...
Bio Mio, Halmtorvet 19, 1700 Map - A super healthy, organic, all-you-can-eat, self-service buffet located in the city's meatpacking district.
DRINK
Dyrehaven, Sønder Blvd 72, 1720 Map - Open morning, noon, and night, this is a great spot for any time of day. Conveniently close to where we stayed, we loved the atmosphere in the evening: once the kitchen closes this place is packed full of young Danes.
Mikkeller, Viktoriagade 8, 1655 Map - The interior of this bar is as special as the beer they serve. Amazing light fittings and bursts of color break up the black-and-white interior of this pub, whose design lies somewhere between modernist and traditional Danish. Serving special beer from the Mikkeller microbrewery, this small but perfectly formed bar is a must-visit for beer lovers.
SEE
Finn Juhl House, Vilvordevej 110, 2920 MAP - Take a short train ride north of the city to the modernist dream house designed and lived in by Danish architect and designer Finn Juhl. There is a view of the garden from each room, and the interior is full of warm hues (the ceilings' colors maximize light reflection) and teak furniture––also designed by Juhl.
Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Gl Strandvej 13, 3050 Humlebæk MAP - Located on the shore of
