Despite my reciting the mantra repeatedly, it turns out that spring break did not last 4ever. My fingers are crossed concerning this next break and Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out” is on repeat. High school seniors have counted down the days until graduation, wondering if they have best articulated their legacy in the yearbook. Undergraduate students everywhere have been dreading the date, which brings with it entrance into the real world.

I’ve rounded up my favorite movies from OC at Ace Hotel’s Criterion Collection that capture the turbulent times, the ignorant bliss, and the growing pains of characters on the threshold. So blow off any remaining homework to rejoice and commiserate with your silver screen classmates.

Drop by Opening Ceremony at Ace Hotel to browse the Criterion Collection.

Prom Night
An anonymous killer seeks revenge on a group of high school seniors, involved in the death of young girl on the night of their prom. Bloody and sexy, Prom Night has everything you look for in a great slasher.

Tiny Furniture

Before Girls, a freshly graduated Lena Dunham brought us her personal post-graduate purgatory. Painfully relatable, Aura finds herself at a crossroads and lacking direction, in Dunham's breakthrough film, Tiny Furniture.

Harold and Maude
Harold and Maude tells the story of a morbid young man who develops a relationship with a joyful, quirky 79-year-old. Exposing Harold to the joy in living, Maude succeeds in changing his outlook.

Rushmore
Eccentric 15-year-old Max Fischer (played by OC fave JASON SCHWARTZMAN) is the king of extracurriculars at his stomping ground, Rushmore Academy. With all of the wit of any WES ANDERSON flick, the film follows Max as he becomes infatuated with the newest teacher and battles for her affection.

Dazed and Confused
No other film evokes nostalgia for the last day of high school quite like Dazed and Confused. This cult classic is chock-full of freshmen hazing and late-night cruising. Featuring an adorably dopy, young Matthew McConaughey and a stellar soundtrack, this film is optimal for reminiscing.

Lord of the Flies
In this 1963 classic, pre-teen English schoolboys are marooned on an island and chaos ensues. The power-hungry youngsters, in scheming and struggling to establish their own rules, reveal the dark side of human nature.
