Bites on a Budget: $6 at BeeHive Oven at Smorgasburg

Spring’s arrival means one thing for me: more snacking outdoors! Luckily, everyone’s favorite weekend food market, Smorgasburg, has reopened to kick off a new season of tanlines and cheap eats. From Mighty Quinn’s BBQ to blowtorched S’mores, all of my Smorga-standbys were back when I visited the market over the weekend. Some tasty-looking newcomers were spotted, as well. A veritable Disneyland of budget bites, I often dart around the market before I commit, however this time my tummy was quick to yell Halt! when I spotted the the biscuits over at BeeHive Oven. I'm a sucker for anything “heritage,” and these heritage biscuits made me think of Granny serving up lovingly baked goods on a Louisianan porch.

Though usually a side to Southern fried chicken, these biscuits are no bit players. In fact, the fried chicken was merely a filling between the perfectly flaky puck-sized cylinders—oven-fresh and salty-sweet. A must-try, though, are the ham and cheese biscuits: slabs of Virginia ham, a thick slice of brie, and a zingy slathering of Jezebel sauce made from apples, pineapple, horseradish, mustard, and red pepper flakes. That’s one gussied-up sausage McMuffin and a fine brunch if I ever saw one! Perfect for munching while walking ‘round the ‘Burg on a sunny Saturday.
