This year, Michael Hoppen Contemporary in London will showcase two major exhibitions as part of its exploration into Japanese photography, beginning with Kinbaku by Nobuyoshi Araki. The series takes its name from the sexual practice of bondage, Kinbaku-bi, which literally means the beauty of tight binding. Arranged alongside Araki's nudes are his flower still lives; these images range from large-scale prints to miniature Polaroids, all of which have a brilliantly rich depth of color and take influence from Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging. The show sheds light on Araki's two major obsessions: women and Tokyo, the city where he spent his childhood. At times the pictures may be bold but the beauty of them is what leaves a resounding impact.

Through June 8th, 2013
