Thanks to the ADIDAS ORIGINALS X OC Spring/Summer 2013 collection, we're feeling sportier than ever! In the "LET'S GET PHYSICAL" series, we check in with friends to find out how they stay in shape.
Singer-slash-songwriter? Yes. Model-slash-DJ? Duh! But blogger-slash-rock climber? Too cute to be true! Yes, you can add rock climbing to Hanneli Mustaparta's list of talents and for a while now, I've stored this kernel of knowledge in the dusty corrals of my mind. Only when I spied the red leopard-print adidas Originals x OC leotard did the neon signs go off—big neon signs that screamed, Get Hanneli into this immediately! Lucky for me, Hanneli was game. We met at Brooklyn Boulders in Boerum Hill to talk fitness, fashion, and her model rock climbing technique.
Name: Hanneli Mustaparta
Occupation: Photographer, blogger, and contributor to Vogue.com and Calvin Klein
Who got you into rock climbing? My big sister started a few years ago and got me into it. But I was always the one climbing trees and going up poles as a kid.
How long have you been rock climbing? A year
What is your rock climbing mantra? Check the ropes and knots before climbing.
What has rock climbing taught you? To be patient when learning a technique. It's not about getting to the top the quickest; it's about finding the most efficient way to use your body to get up the wall.
Any advice for someone just learning to climb? Learn from someone who knows the sport well. I saw someone trying to convince the instructor at Chelsea Piers to pass them on the belay course. It turned out they had only learned how to tie knots and belay from YouTube!
What other sports do you play? I do Muay Thai, yoga, cycle, and long board around the city.
Favorite healthy snacks? I like to add a juice to my meals for extra nutrition—like a green one with kale, broccoli, apples, spinach, and lemon. I switch between that and orange and carrot juice. These are all homemade, by the way. I have a juicer and am having lots of fun trying different recipes. My go-to recipe is one part orange, one part cucumber, one part broccoli, and one part pineapple. Juice it in that order!
What are the top songs on your pre-climb playlist?
1. "Thrift Shop" by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis
2. "Bad Bitch" by Pink Dollaz
3. "Beautiful People" by Melanie Safka
Who is your fitness hero? I don't think I really have one. But I am impressed by Cecilie Brækhus who is the undefeated World Champion in boxing. It's funny as she's Norwegian and boxing is illegal there and now she is the champion.
Finish this sentence: In high school, gym class was… the most fun I had all week. I played most sports growing up. I used to compete in swimming and would win gold and silver a lot.
