In 1970s Soho (London's seedy red light district), light artist Chris Bracey knew he could transform the area with his glamorous and vibrant neon designs. Soon every clubowner in the neighborhood wanted a piece of Bracey, or at least his lights. Bracey has worked with neon and lights for over 30 years, and his career has resulted in high-profile commissions from celebrity clients and film directors (his work has appeared in Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut, Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and all of the Batman films). His first solo exhibition, I've Looked up to Heaven and Been Down to Hell at Scream, is a partly autobiographical exploration of heaven and hell, and of the struggle between good and evil ideology. The show features nostalgic imagery of Las Vegas and Soho sex shops, with neon signs that read "Find Love Upstairs" and "Saint and Sin" referencing his early days as an artist. Popular culture also plays an important part in his work––one piece, "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out," takes its inspiration directly from the Smiths song.
