Today is the birthday of influential and all-around inspirational author, Vladimir Nabokov! Born in 1899 in St. Petersburg, his family fled Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution and landed in England, where he enrolled at the University of Cambridge. After Cambridge, Vladimir moved to Berlin where he received recognition for his poetry and writing within the immigrant population, married his love Vera, moved to France, only to flee to America in 1940 as the German troops advanced during World War II. In America, he began writing exclusively in English and teaching at prestigious universities.
The results of his writing are all enjoyable but his major novel was penned during butterfly-collecting trips between academic semesters (V was also a skilled lepidopterist). In 1953, Vlad finished Lolita, the controversial novel about an English professor, Humbert Humbert, and his illicit love for his step-daughter, Dolores Haze; She was Lo, plain Lo, in the morning, standing four feet ten in one sock. She was Lola in slacks. She was Dolly at school. She was Dolores on the dotted line. But in my arms she was always Lolita. The book blew up the literary scene and offered Nabokov a place in history.
