Nestled among the myriad of restaurants that line MacDougal Street in the Village is Thelewala. Although I consider myself a long-time lover of Indian food, I have to admit that my go-to tikka masala is hardly out of the ordinary. Thelewala’s Calcutta Nizami rolls, on the other hand, are the real thing.
I settled on the THELEwala Chicken Roll ($5.50) for my first foray into the world of Indian food cart specialties. The roll consists of marinated strips of chicken (spiced upon request!), red onions, and a layer of fried egg. The fresh ingredients are conveniently wrapped, making it the perfect on-the-go lunch or late-night grab—who doesn't love finger food? Thelewala offers simplicity and plenty of flavor—it's the best of street food and it even comes with a place to sit.
