New York-based artist Todd James (aka R.E.A.S) is currently showing his World Domination series at Lazarides Gallery, his first solo show in London since 2008. The exhibition couldn't be better timed as James' exclusive illustrations currently feature in the Oc x Spring Breakers collection! World Domination is a continuation of his Somali Pirate series and similarly adopts a vivid and tropical color palette, while the subject matter pointedly addresses David and Goliath themes of survival, justice, and ownership.
Also on display at the gallery is a recreation of James' Vandal's Bedroom, a sprawling graffitied installation that was a highlight of the Art in the Streets 2011 exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in LA. The installation is a bedroom turned battlefield, giving an intimate insight into James' imaginary artistic takeover. The marker drawings are reminiscent of 80s New York subway graffiti—it's fitting then that the show's title pays homage to London's World Domination crew, active in the mid-80s.
Through April 13th, 2013.
