Created by Brits Jamie Hewlett and Alan Martin, the comic book Tank Girl was released in a 1988 issue of comic magazine Deadline, introducing us all to our favorite tank-driving outlaw. And while many of you may recognize the illustrators' more recent work, the creation of virtual band Gorillaz, the entire Tank Girl series started with a fanzine advertisement reading, "She'll break your back and your balls!" The comic saw success as 90s counterculture flourished—the protagonist, Tank Girl, unconcerned with manners and modesty, empowered girls everywhere.

Tank Girl (real name Rebecca Buck)—counting violence, destruction, and hair dye among her fortés—embarks on surreal adventures throughout post-apocalyptic Australia with her mutant kangaroo boyfriend, Booga. In 1995, (March 31st, to be precise) director Rachel Talalay translated Tank Girl to the silver screen, with actress Lori Petty as the famed character, brought to life. Also starring a young Naomi Watts and a sinister Malcolm McDowell, Tank Girl the movie has garnered a cult following in its own right. Incorporating artillery into undergarments long before Gaga's machine gun bra, Tank Girl's tattered, punk wardrobe will make you want to raid the army surplus store and release your inner bad babe.
