Zubaz. Bodybuilders wore them, entire NFL teams wore them, even Claudia Schiffer wore them. And if you've seen Spring Breakers, you'll know that Alien wears them too. (He has shorts, in every color.) They are a weirdly perfect accompaniment to Candy, Cotty, and Brit's DTF trackpants, so naturally we wanted to stock them alongside our OC x Spring Breakers collection. But what are Zubaz? And where did they come from?
Gym owners Dan Stock and Bob Truax founded Zubaz in the mid-80s to provide for lifters who had outgrown "normal" clothing. The idea was to create the most comfortable pant possible with a look as out-there as its wearer. Zebra stripes soon became Zubaz's signature print, and Dan and Bob quickly expanded into a zoo of other patterns to keep up with demand. At the brand's pinnacle, in around 1992, the roster of Zubaz-sporting football stars included the country's top players, including the only football player I've heard of apart from Tom Brady: John Madden. Relaunched in 2007, Zubaz is now staging a comeback (shout out to Spring Breakers costume designer Heidi Bivens!). Just try on a pair of billowy elastic-waisted shorts or a soft zebra-print pool slide and you'll understand.
