Fine Wine: Happy Birthday, David LaChapelle!

Only after dropping out of school at age 15 and exploring the New York nightclub scene, did David LaChapelle enroll in a North Carolinian arts school and discover his passion for photography. In 1984, David presented his first body of work at a friend's loft space in New York and shortly after he was hired by Andy Warhol at Interview magazine. While his subjects (who range from Gaga to Hillary Clinton, Paris Hilton to Muhammad Ali) are always recognizable, the scenarios within which they appear are always surprising. Consistently sensual and provocative, the images are awash with pop culture references and criticisms of contemporary society—they're fantastical, dark, and humorous all at once. Today we celebrate David's birthday by taking a closer look at just some of his amazing photographs.
