It's no secret that we are huge fans of The Aikiu, our friend Alex's pop music project. So we were thrilled to see the otherworldly video that Lisa Paclet did for his new single 'Fools.' Featuring a layered gallery of humans and animals with a hand-scratched overlay on 16mm film, the video is a truly mysterious trip. We asked Lisa a few questions about the collaboration.

How did you and The Aikiu develop the concept for the video?
Alex came to me  with the song and I immediately loved it. He told me it was about an overall societal mutation.

I was interested exploring the idea of destruction and transformation of one's physical appearance so I proposed to Alex to juxtapose very different archetypes of people and have them "self-destruct" by manually scratching part of their faces out of the 16mm film.

We worked tightly together on each element we wanted to include in the film: the evolution of each character, other than the visual self destruction, includes an element of self doubt, while the animals are there as witnesses to this "foolish" human evolution.

The visual references to War and Peace suggest the interior struggle one feels while undergoing a transformation.

The mountain that appears in the beginning and at the end of the film is something I added spontaneously in the animatic phase, without asking myself why, just as  a breath of fresh air. Now I see it more as the space inside the characters' heads, the natural world that exists outside, and despite the human mind, a hopeful note to end on.

Can you remember when you first met Alex?
I think it was a while back at a party! He give me his number and because it was in the As I kept on pocket calling him by accident every couple of months! Poor Alex! We became good friends over the last year. I really enjoyed the way we worked together on this project.

Are you sick of the song?
Not at all! It's a great song! Sometimes after the editing process one can end up hating the song they've been editing to, but not this one. I still listen to it almost every day! At The Editors, the company that produced the film, people are still walking down the hallways humming "foo-oo-oo-oo-ooolllsss."

Which do you prefer, animals or people?
People who are animals
