Introducing Gypsy Sport

The phrase "statement piece" fills me with horror. But I kind of love the idea of a statement beanie or cap. Gypsy Sport is brand new to OC this season and the line's spring collection of metallic snapbacks and hats trimmed with soda can pulls are genius. I particularly love the patch with a nose ring worked into the graphic. The brand hails from Harlem and produces both headwear (featured in last season's DKNY show) and ready-to-wear—namely T-shirts decorated with crochet and collaged computerized prints. Check out the pieces and our Q&A with designers Rio Uribe and Philip O'Sullivan below!

Alice Newell-Hanson: First off, what is a "gypsy sport"?
Gypsy Sport: "Gypsy sport" is a term used to describe a game or activity with no official rules or equipment. In developing countries kids are resourceful, they use whatever gear they can find and create new games on the spot. We take the same approach in creating our streetwear, taking generic items we find and remixing them into fresh pieces.

ANH: Who is team Gypsy Sport?
GS: We are a two-man team, based out of New York City. Philip is a Northeast native. He's the textile and product designer responsible for the hand-embellishments and graphics. Rio was born and raised in Los Angeles. He is the hat designer and sources the materials for each season like the crochet knits, puka shells, and ethnic taqiyah caps.

ANH: What inspired this collection?
GS: Our spring collection is about turning rags into riches and self-decor: tees and caps are made of recycled materials like karate belts, shoe laces, and soda can tabs. In many cultures men decorate themselves to show status or wealth, and we wanted to incorporate that feeling. The graphics are digital collages of concepts that inspire us: religion, athletics, and psychedelics. The Poseidon tee and the Stomp Sport tee are both exclusive to Opening Ceremony.

ANH: What's your spring soundtrack?
GS: Mykki Blanco, Kendrick Lamar, the OC mixtapes, and Fade to Mind. We're also really feeling this neo-R&B movement like the Weeknd, Frank Ocean, and Inc.

ANH: Do you have a dream collaboration?
GS: It would be so cool to collaborate with New York's Ali Forney Center. They provide shelter to homeless youth in New York City. Of course, if Nike ever approached us to collaborate, we would just do it!

ANH: What's in store for Fall/Winter 2013?
GS: It's all about the Year of the Snake. Chinese wisdom says that "a snake in the house means that no one will starve." So if you're hungry for more Gypsy Sport, worry not, we will be serving up seconds very soon.
