Talk about going bare bones. Currently on display at Andrea Rosen Gallery is a series of large-scale skeletons of paintings, sandwiched between two chaotic, aquatic-themed printed photographs embossed with the word NONSTOP. The screen-covered canvases have an acute rawness to them and, despite their stark simplicity, feel somewhat alive––something that might have to do with the accidental-looking perforations in their flesh.
The gallery's back room serves to screen Acoustics (Eaton Canyon), a video of the artist clapping his hands over a body of water, which responds to the staccato reverberations with new ripples and creases––both mesmerizing and maddening to watch. But the common thread that weaves the disparate pieces together is the Rem Koolhaas passage that inspired the exhibition's title, Electric Bathing. In Delirious New York, Koolhaas describes the acceptable artifice of Coney Island as: "Bright lights are placed at regular intervals along the surf line, so that now the sea can be enjoyed on a truly metropolitan shift system, giving those unable to reach the water in the day time a manmade, 12 hour extension [...] false daytime is not regarded as second rate." Piece together the puzzle for yourself before March 23rd, when the show closes.
