OC x NYFW: SUNO FW13

Each season the SUNO girl travels a little further from the kanga-printed separates that made her the cutest girl at the beach party. For fall, Erin Beatty and Max Osterweis presented a series of directional looks noticeably lacking in the prints that made the brand a (Vogue-subscribing) household name. Clues that SUNO had evolved into a new era? A wool charcoal-grey jumpsuit, pin-striped baggy-cut separates that harken back to Yohji Yamamoto's heyday, and an invasion of tartan, all laced through with a sense of power. As Erin told us: "We wanted to play with the idea of strength and empowerment. How women arm themselves each and every day through what they choose to wear.  We explored this with different techniques such as quilting, embroidery and even crystal beading to create a sense of modern armour."

The whimsical touches for which the brand is known appeared in folkloric embroidery and prints with a tapestry bent. Printed and solid flat ankle boots created in collaboration with Nicholas Kirkwood rounded out the looks. Many outfits, styled by the ever-talented Brian Molloy, featured layers of options for a real wardrobe: crisp collared shirts peeking out from tunics, nifty jackets, and skirts over pants (yes! skirts over pants!). Brian said that the styling for the show was "really about elaborating on the brand and incorporating new options into the SUNO world." And the SUNO girl for fall? Brian sees her as "someone who is intelligent but still quite playful as well. She understands fashion very well but goes more for the interesting and thoughtful pieces." Oh, perf, that's us!
