For the month of February, Suzanne Geiss Gallery has been transformed into DIS' photo studio, where the irreverent mag has set up shop "creating new stock options." Here, artists including Ian Cheng, OC collaborator Max Farago, and Xavier Cha take over the set on a rotating basis to play with stereotypes and produce new stock images, and it's all open for the public to experience.
I dropped by earlier this week, when it was Dora Budor up at bat. The theme of the shoot? New perfume options. So what exactly about two pedigree Weimaraners dressed in fratty wool sweater vests on-set with a Susan Sontag (posing coolly with a hula hoop and a few casually scattered Deleuze books) screams "Inevitable"? For those who have seen Kim Kardashian's signature fragrance ads, the connection was clear, and by reappropriating the Kim K imagery, Dora explores the admittedly bizarre notion of essence through smell. "The whole project is trying to weave a different narrative into the presentation of different lifestyles in the fragrance industry, implementing smell––identity one can buy. It's an aura that trails and precedes a human in social space," she points out.
Once Dora's team seemed to have their money shot, it was onto the next concept––a version of Calvin Klein's Obsession fragrance, but as an ambigu-sexual Bromance bonding scene featuring spray-tanned boys in strategially cut-out clothing. Oh, and an "unknown Russian monument" in the background. (Dora's words, not mine.) Alice Deejay's "Do You Think You're Better Off Alone" blaring in the gallery-cum-Jersey Shore set could not have been more perfect. Check my snaps below, and find the full calendar of events here on the Suzanne Geiss website.
Through February 23, 2013.
