OC Online Blog/Editorial intern Chelsea reports.
Three seemingly unrelated works are placed alongside one another at Sean Kelly Gallery's most recent exhibition, Grasso, Grimonprez, Koh: Three Installations.
Step into the front area of the gallery and you’ll find Terence Koh’s one person at a time, two all-white cast wax figures of the artist: one laying belly-up on a chaise lounge, the other standing and peering in a typical Koh-like pose (hands positioned behind his back). A single light shines upon the figures, giving the self portrait a minimalistic feel as the artist pays homage to the Freudian idea of the examined self.
Around the corner and into the middle room, Laurent Grasso’s large-scale piece, Infinite Night, plays with words and meaning by displaying the phrase “day for night” in bubbly typeface, sprawled ten feet high on the walls in neon lights. The blue hue of the lights mimics the kind used to light nighttime scenes shot during the day, creating the sense that you're in a nightclub rather than an art gallery.
Down the stairs and into the screening room, a short film highlighting very Hitchcockian motifs and visuals runs on repeat. Created by Johan Grimonprez, Looking for Alfred uses Hitchcock impersonators and famous film references, such as crows and umbrellas, to create a suspenseful fusion of all things Alfred.
Through February 9th, 2013. All images © The artists; Courtesy: Sean Kelly, New York.
