Not one, but two remarkable exhibitions currently occupy the gallery spaces of Gavin Brown's Enterprise. Both artists Christopher Knowles and Nick Relph draw on subjects of popular culture and bring their unique perspective to their shows.
On the one hand, the linear minimalism of British artist-filmmaker Nick Relph ignites the space with a sort of phantom tension. Relph's standout installation of the exhibition, The Weather, consists solely of car wheels aligned to mimic the placement of three vehicles, side by side. Smelling overwhelmingly of rubber, the stationary, stand-alone wheels evoke a rigidity that mimics a step in an assembly line. The same stark lines are present in the work that inhabits the second gallery of his pieces. Works like Tailoring for Punks, an outstretched projection screen cut into a grid, are framed by red lines, which circle the room. Extra-large images of moons and pianos dominate, while videos featuring birds chirping provide the ambiance.
In the third gallery reside the shockingly colorful tableaus of Christopher Knowles. Small canvases, painted with archival marker, that line the white walls are sure-fire attention grabbers. Some pieces are complex and graphic, others simple and striking; Knowles' compact works pack a real punch. From Budweiser logos, to the collage-like American football image of Guys Playing Football, Knowles' subjects are varied yet remain unified in their vibrancy.
The understated and industrial work of Relph alongside the directness of Knowles' Pop canvases give you two reasons to check out the work of these artists before the 23rd! Also check out Nick Relph's book, vestiarium scotium, available at OC!
