This weekend Los Angeles is host to Printed Matter's first LA Art Book fair at the MOCA Geffen. Sprawling over the entirety of MOCA's gallery spaces, the fair presents over 200 publishers along with their zines, books, and ephemera. Several photo and art installations are sprinkled around the booths, offering a break from the dizzying number of books.
Known for his prolific black-brushed line drawings and zine output, it's no surprise to see dozens of Raymond Pettibon's work on display at the Zine Masters of the Universe exhibition. While Boo-Hooray's massive collection of Larry Clark exhibition posters, T-shirts, and skateboards epitomize the DIY/punk attitude that effuses within the zine world. Sundown Schoolhouse presents the Reading Lounge and Drop-In Center, a continuing site-specific installation project by artist Fritz Haeg. A makeshift and easily missed entrance leads to an intimate room, providing reprieve from the hubbub of the main fair. Visitors are welcomed by a lovely crocheted spiral floor, a herbal tea corner, and other activities.
Other notable booths include the LA-based Iko Iko with their inclusive philosophy of in-house publishing, clothing construction, wood sculpture, and furniture. Paper Monument's always-profound titles like I Like Your Work: Art and Etiquette inject a bit of cheeky humor into the rather awkward business of approaching artists you admire. For the collector with deep pockets, Anartist, Arcana, and LEADAPRON offer well-kept limited edition and rare art and photography books. Be sure to block out at least two hours and look at everything at a leisurely pace. Rest frequently to avoid ADHD book overload!
