Conceptual artist David Lamelas first exhibited his site-specific installation Corner Pieces in his native Buenos Aires in 1967. Having since moved from Argentina to Europe, and America, Lamelas found himself, and four new variations of his Corner Pieces, in NYC last night, at his Maccarone gallery opening. Knowing that Lamelas often experiments with concepts of space (outside vs. inside) and time, I consciously "opened my mind" while walking to the gallery.
Even before I set foot in the front door, my mind was propelled into perplexity thanks to the the front window installation, New York City n'Existe Pas. Dizzy at the thought, I entered the gallery only to be blinded by the beam of the projector installation. To my right was an empty white room, a standard gallery space, but with altered corners (protruding rectangles and upside down pyramids) intervening with the space of the room.
The final room of the gallery was where the "sonic intervention" took place. In the room, separated diagonally by two sheetrock walls shy of the ceiling, musicians Jorge Chikiar and John King performed an "audio swapping" piece, with a viola concerto and analog synthesizers. Standing in front of the musicians, then behind the partitions, you could hear the different variations of their collaborative sound. The piece was recorded and will play for the duration of the exhibition.
New York Exists in 8.5 Billion Sq. Ft is on until February 4.
