'Locals Only' is a column in which we ask friends from Argentina, our featured country, where they like to eat, thrift, hideout, and hang out when visiting their homeland.
A woman of the world, stylist extraordinaire, and, ahem, OC model, Marina Muñoz is known for her idiosyncratic style and super fun energy. An Argentinean girl, through and through, Marina gives us all her favorite places to visit while in Buenos Aires.
Place for a low-key dinner with friends: Dominga restaurant
Place for a first date: Farinelli in Palermo
Gallery or museum: Museo Eduardo Sívori and while you're there, visit El Rosedal and have tea at the Japanese Garden. The Malba is also a must, it has a great collection of Frida Kahlos, Guillermo Kuitcas, and Boteros, among other great Latin American artists.
Bookstore: El Ateneo is huge and beautiful.
Place for coffee: Any café is good! Café Tortoni is very famous. It is over 150 years old, and is in the older part of the city.
Vintage store: Gil Antigüedades in the San Telmo market is the most brilliant and exclusive vintage shop. John Galliano went a few years ago and basically bought an entire floor. Say hello to Maria Ines and her husband Cacho for me, they are such a fun couple! At the San Telmo market walk down the calle Defensa, the Plaza, and Dorrego—there are amazing shops around that area. You can also find rugs, tables, and chairs at Ricardo Paz's store in Palermo.
Clothing store: Fahoma Bijoux, Male Palandjolgou de Kukla, Zapatos Mishka, and Nadine Zlotogora.
Place for choripan sandwiches: El Pobre Luis. I love this place, you eat so well.
Place for steak: La Brigada has the best meat in the world. The meat is so tender you can cut it with a spoon! I used to live two blocks away and would dine there as often as possible. (It can be a bit pricey but it's so worth it.)
Best alfajor cookie: Havana boutiques, but you can order alfajores de maizena (corn bread) in all restaurants, and they are magical. Farinelli is a great place to get alfajores and pastries. Also, be sure you try the jorgitos at the kiosks.
Place for babe watching: Any café or bar that is playing a soccer match.
Barrio to spend your Sunday: San Telmo, where I used to live, or Tigre. I advise taking the train to Tigre and spending a nice Sunday buying cowhide rugs and copper pans. The restaurant Olsen is excellent for brunch on a Sunday.
Weekend getaway: Santa Clara is my favorite campo to visit on weekends. It's in the 25 de Mayo region and owned by old friends of mine. Simply breathtaking.
What do you always bring back with you from visiting Argentina? Alfajores, dulce de leche, bombachas de campo, alpargatas de tela or carpincho, mate bombillas, and the Penguin wine carafes.
