I made a trip to Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City, Queens on a recent frigid afternoon to see the environmental artworks that were produced for the 2012 Emerging Artist Fellowship (EAF). It's an annual open call that awards up-and-coming artists a $5,000 grant and outdoor residency in the Park each summer. This year's artistic responses to the question of Queens and its particular ecology range from Fernando Mastrangelo's Feed (a Virgin Mary cast in bird seed––please note two cats on the prowl) to Sarah Dornner's Pole Trap (a 35-foot pole, woven with hot yellow and grey security straps, that seems to shoot upward into infinity).
The highlight was Chang-Jin Lee's Floating Echo, a translucent, inflatable Buddha on the Hudson River, which was part of the Asian American Arts Alliance’s Locating the Sacred Festival. After visiting EAF '12, I set out to the coffee shop Sweetleaf, located just over the Pulaski Bridge in Long Island City, for a hot chai latte and gluten-free vegan pear bread. It's worth the trek!
