ASK DARS is an advice column in which no sartorial dilemma is too big or small for DARIA, our lead stylist, to address. Write her with your real-life questions and she'll answer them in the weeks to come!

Dear Dars,

Holiday season is in full effect and it seems crazier than ever! What are some cute outfits I can wear for those two-a-days, when I have to go to something with my family but have plans with my friends afterwards?

xo,
Rachel, New York

Hey Rachel,

Good question! As evidenced by photo albums stocked with a four-year-old me in gigantic crinoline-filled dresses and massive hair bows, my mother has always tried to force me to dress up for the occasion, which is like ugh so not cool sometimes, mom! But alas, with some super simple swap-outs, you can go from family time to friend time smoothly. Check it out here!

Dressed up: Brocade is just one of those things that makes you feel expensive when you wear it––and it's way less obvious than, say, fur and bling. This Opening Ceremony PLUNGE NECK DRESS comes in my personal favorite color palette and looks super sweet when paired with a pearly OC HAND BEADED LONG-SLEEVE CARDIGAN. The Anndra Neen for Opening Ceremony MELTED STRIPED OVAL PURSE is a no-brainer and also makes for a good conversation piece because, well, it’s not your grandmother’s handbag. Shoes: Chloë Sevigny for Opening Ceremony HEELED CHELSEA BOOTS

"Before" look: Rachel in the Rachel Comey SAND DOLLAR VEST

Dressed down: Do fishnet tights kind of not get enough play IRL? I feel like they’re still relevant in theory, but so few people take the chance to put them into practice. Don’t be scared!

Dressed up: This Acne ALIX DRESS is so 90s Gwyneth (like when she was perfect but not yet a perfectionist) it kills me! It’s so subtly sexy, and the powder blue color is unexpected for the holidays. Plus, it will look appropriate all year round. Here, I paired it with my favorite Cole Haan x Jen Brill & Olivia Kim
