Art Basel Miami: Photo Diary, Part 1

This year's fair marked my first time ever in Miami, and needless to say, it felt like a zoo from the second I arrived last Thursday. I boarded the plane from New York with my pals Gaspard and Maripol, and right off the plane, I put on a tux for the amfAR party at the Soho House. I got there to hilariously find that the dress code was far more casual. But regardless, I still enjoyed checking out the benefit auction pieces, which were selected by Klaus Biesenbach and a host of other names that also formed the honorary chair committee (Chloë Sevigny, Joseph Altuzarra, Christopher Bollen, Fabien Baron, and Marian Goodman among them).

After hanging out on the beach, Gaspard and I decided to walk down Collins Avenue to meet up with Maripol again. From there, we went to a few parties like Chez André at Hotel Shelborne, the poolside at the Delano, and Orchid Circus, where Le Baron was throwing a party. The night was warm and balmy, and it almost felt like we were surfing from one place to another.

The following day, I woke up with my brain feeling like a rotten battery. But I headed straight to Art Basel anyway and spent hours looking at some great work––there was some especially fantastic stuff by Doug Aitken, Ed Ruscha, and Ryan McGinley. Have a look, and stay tuned for Part 2.
