Givenchy and Hepburn, Saint Laurent and de la Falaise... the relationship between designer and muse has been integral to fashion history. Our favorite contemporary designers and their influences are no exception. This season, we asked designers to photograph the people, places, or objects that inspired their Fall/Winter 2012 collections. Who is your muse? All the fashion people and models around the world.
Describe the first time you met: I met Won Kim shooting a campaign for a collection I collaborated on. He struck me as an enfant terrible.
How does he influence you? The streetwear influence comes from my muses, which is fused with my haute aesthetic. That’s why in all of my collection there is an element of “the street.”
Does your inspiration change from season to season? New inspiration comes to me every season and it becomes the driving force for the collection. Reinventing what is classic is a constant element in all of my collections.
Have you and your muse ever worked collaboratively? Not yet, but for the coming collection in January, I will be showing something inspired by Won. I can’t reveal it yet as it will be quite shocking but I will say it will be an homage to Asian chic-ness.
What is your favorite thing to do together? To have conversations and make observations
Does he have a secret talent? His ability to mix and match his style—it’s very unpredictable. And his sense of humor.
Do you have any secret talents? Seeing the potential in others and helping realize that potential.
Where did you shoot these photos? It was shot in a studio. I like the studio space very much as it is not only a place where visions become tangible but also where designers, photographers, models, and hair and makeup come together. Having people who are integral to the fashion industry in one place, conversing and working, is very inspiring to me.
In another life, my muse was myself.
