Ask Dars is an advice column in which no sartorial dilemma is too big or small for Daria, our lead stylist, to address. Write her with your real-life questions and she'll answer them in the weeks to come! This week, we invited blog reader Emily to visit Daria at OC and get her question answered in person!
Dear Daria,
I write with a question that reaches past this chilly winter to the upcoming spring. I am curating an exhibition, So To Speak, in late March in Brooklyn, and I am wondering what one might wear to an opening when one has grown weary of black cocktail dresses?
In search,

Hi Emily,
First of all, congrats on the exhibit! My guess is that you’re set to do a lot of talking and hand shaking, so skip the black cocktail dresses altogether and wear something that 1) makes you feel totally comfortable and 2) lets people find you. The moment I saw this incredible Peter Pilotto dress on you, I knew we had to go for it because it fits you like a glove. You look bangin' yet entirely appropriate, and the smile on your face was completely infectious!
Since this dress is not exactly one that lets you blend into the crowd, go simple on the jewelry so that you’re not overdoing it. The color and shape of this spherical Unearthen ring is a nice contrast to the sharp lines on the dress.
Your shoes should be pretty chill too––but be sure not to wear something too classic, like a basic pump, or else you may run the risk of looking like you’re trying to tone down the dress too much and, in turn, letting the dress wear you. These Opening Ceremony shoes are perfect––they’re nude, so they don’t distract, but they have an interesting shape and texture that’s weather-appropriate for spring. Usually a mid-calf shoe plus a below-the-knee skirt would turn a supermodel into a stump, but since the shoes are nude they actually do the exact opposite and lengthen your silhouette. It’s all about keeping it interesting!
Have an amazing time and tell us how it goes!
