Fine Wine: Happy Birthday, Isabella Blow

Today would have been Isabella Blow's 54th birthday. Sadly, she is no longer here to send well wishes to so instead we honor her in this Fine Wine. Born in Marylebone, London, Isabella moved to New York in 1979 to study Ancient Chinese Art. From there, she worked with the likes of Anna Wintour and André Leon Talley at American Vogue and later as the fashion editor at publications including British Vogue, The Sunday Times, and Tatler. It was while she was at British Vogue that Issy attended the graduate show at Central Saint Martins London. Viewing the collections from a cramped corner (all of the seats were taken), she marveled at the work of a very young Alexander McQueen. Afterwards, she purchased the entire collection for £5,000, paid in £100 weekly installments. Isabella was also the catalyst in the careers of milliner Philip Treacy, designer Hussein Chalayan, and models Sophie Dahl, Stella Tennant, and Honor Fraser. Never seen without her dark red lips, hidden behind one of Treacy's creations, Isabella will remain unsurpassed in her style and pioneering perspective and will forever be remembered as a mentor and muse.
