Givenchy and Hepburn, Saint Laurent and de la Falaise... the relationship between designer and muse has been integral to fashion history. Our favorite contemporary designers and their influences are no exception. This season, we asked designers to photograph the people, places, or objects that inspired their Fall/Winter 2012 collections. Part muse, part secret weapon, Nicole Cari is to Scott Sternberg as peanut butter is to jelly, pen is to paper… Well, you get the picture. Having started at Band of Outsiders as Scott’s assistant, Nicole now works alongside Scott to develop the women’s collections Boy and girl and, of course, the brand’s always exciting Polaroid campaigns. Who is your muse? Nicole Cari
Describe the first time you met: I first met Nicole while interviewing her to be my assistant, at a time when I was basically working alone. We were in my new place, where I lived and worked, which sat above downtown Hollywood. She couldn't have been more enthusiastic.
How to they influence you? Hypnotism. Sometimes waterboarding when I'm being difficult.
What’s the relationship between designer and muse? It's honest, open, direct.
Does your inspiration change from season to season? Is there any sort of concept that you feel always has an influence on your collection? The mood changes from season to season, as well as the inspiration which informs that. But Boy and girl are always tethered by their individual codes, the brand concepts (menswear influence/tailoring vs. romanticism/flou) that drive them.
Have you and your muse ever worked collaboratively? If so, how? We talk about everything I'm working on for the women's collections––fabric selection, shapes, prints, show concepts, everything.
What is your favorite thing to do together? Shooting the Polaroid campaigns.
Does he/she have a secret talent? She can set a dinner table like no other.
Do you have any secret talents? I pick up musical instruments pretty fast.
