Givenchy and Hepburn, Saint Laurent and de la Falaise... the relationship between designer and muse has been integral to fashion history. Our favorite contemporary designers and their influences are no exception. This season, we asked designers to photograph the people, places, or objects that inspired their Fall/Winter 2012 collections. From batmobiles in Paris to the best skate spots in Moscow, they did not disappoint. Check out what else they came up with in our new series, "Under the Influence."
One look at Gio Forfex’s website will tell you that he’s never short of inspiration. Not convinced? Take a look at the army of Tumblr babes posting images of themselves on his ScreeNeration blog. After launching collaborations with everyone from Terence Koh to Hello Kitty, Gio asked one of his muses, John Holland of Salem, to design his next shoe. Read how the collaboration came about alongside this self-portrait series that John made exclusively for OC.
Who is your muse? I change my mind 123,423,432 times a day. Generally, I hate to stay fixed on the same idea for too long. I like to experiment so my muse changes all the time. Wow, that makes me sound like a real bitch! Lol.
Can you recall the first time you were inspired? Cartoons were my first source of inspiration: When I was younger, I would draw pictures of Walt Disney characters like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy. I would study their mannerisms and imitate their voices.
What’s the relationship between designer and muse? I have a free and open relationship with all of my muses… there are no rules!
Does your inspiration change from season to season? I have many inspirations. I like to think of them as liquids that I mix to make into a cocktail!
Have you and John ever worked collaboratively? Once, I took a photo of John in a park. Honestly, I was only interested in his shoes. I contacted him later and we began talking about shoes. And then the collaboration came about!
Does John have a secret talent? Yes, being sexy!
Do you have any secret talents? Maybe. I always make the wrong decision… that’s a kind of a talent, right?
In another life, my muse was: Catwoman
