Givenchy and Hepburn, Saint Laurent and de la Falaise... the relationship between designer and muse has been integral to fashion history. Our favorite contemporary designers and their influences are no exception. This season, we asked designers to photograph the people, places, or objects that inspired their Fall/Winter 2012 collections. From batmobiles in Paris to the best skate spots in Moscow, they did not disappoint. Check out what else they came up with in our new series, "Under the Influence."
We’ve had the good fortune of watching Erin Beatty and Max Osterweis grow SUNO from day one. A brand that once made its line entirely out of one-of-a-kind Kangas has since evolved into a fully-fledged seasonal collection, and their inspiration has surely changed along the way. Erin discusses their muse, Tamu, below.
Who is your muse? Tamu McPherson
Describe the first time you met: Our head of e-commerce [and OC alum], Anja Tyson, introduced us over drinks. Anja thought Tamu would be a wonderful muse for SUNO—she was absolutely right.
How does she influence you? Tamu is completely natural and confident. She's inspiring just by being herself.
What’s the relationship between designer and muse? It is the perfect balance between friendship and fantasy.
Does SUNO's inspiration change from season to season? The same woman, or idea of woman, inspires us each season: she's always intelligent, confident, and creative. The inspiration, however, is flexible.
Have you and Tamu ever worked collaboratively? Tamu was a guest curator for the SUNO website—she pulled together looks in her adorable way.
What is your favorite thing to do together? We are yet to figure that out. I imagine shopping with Tamu would be fantastic.
Do you have any secret talents? I can touch my wrist with the same hand and Max is an incredible bowler.
In another life, my muse was: Zelda Fitzgerald. Definitely.
