With downtown New York still in the dark and much of the East Coast struggling to repair damage from Superstorm Sandy, it's time to pitch in and help out. We were inspired by the social media calls to action from our Opening Ceremony book co-editor Ken Miller, who has tons of information on relief efforts in the NY area. Ken gave us this exhaustive list of ways to participate and make sure people in distress are getting the help they need.
Manhattan
City Meals on Wheels needs assistance delivering meals to elderly people without electricity. This includes people who are trapped in high-rise buildings without electricity to power, so make sure to bring a flashlight. Getting involved is quick and easy––stop by 355 Lexington Avenue (at 40th Street) and ask for Sheila. Call (212) 687-1234 or check for additional info at http://www.citymeals.org.
Tribeca Chabad has been organizing groups of people to check on residents without power in the downtown area. Call (212) 566-6764 and ask for Chana or email info@tribecachabad.com.

Momofuku is hosting three events to benefit the American Red Cross: at Má Pêche (15 W. 56th Street) and Café Boulud (20 E 76th Street) in Manhattan, and Noodle Bar (382 Metropolitan Avenue) in Brooklyn. For more information on the events, visit longplay.momofuku.com.

Brooklyn Tech High School (at Dekalb and South Elliott) in Fort Greene and the Park Slope Armory (at 8th Avenue and 14th Street) are both acting as refugee centers for about 1,000 people displaced from the Rockaways. You can simply stop by and offer to help.
The Brooklyn Kitchen (100 Frost Street and Meeker) and Pilgrim Surf (68 N 3rd and Wythe) in Williamsburg are both coordinating donation runs to the Rockaways. You can drop off canned foods, heavy duty trash bags, clothes (large sizes preferable), and offer to help out.
Masbia is cooking meals that will be served to displaced and needy people. You can find info at http://www.masbia.org.
The Rockaways have been particularly hard hit––for up-to-date info you can check https://www.facebook.com/RockawayRelief.

PS1 curator Klaus Biesenbach is organizing relief efforts for the Rockaways. You can stop by the museum to drop off donations or offer assistance.
