Our lovely friends, Nicholas Andersen and Julie Ho of Confettisystem, shared with us this D.I.Y. tutorial for adorable, party-perfect New Year's pompom hats. There's still time to whip up a few for the NYE festivities!
A very simple and quick way to create a festive party hat is by customizing a store bought party hat and creating something special and fun to ring in the new year with your loved ones! All you need is a bit of tissue paper, metallic foil, scotch tape, scissors, a blade, hot glue, and a glue gun.
When you're shopping for hats, look for a simple solid colored hat as a good base to add on to. To create a more playful color combination, choose tissue paper that is slightly lighter or more neutral in tone to contrast the brightness of the base color.
We love decorating with our friends, and this is a fun and easy project you can do together at your party! Happy New Year!

Cut 3"x15" tissue paper strips (you'll need 2 strips to make 1 pompom).
![]()
Lay 2 strips on top of each other and use your scissors to cut 2" deep fringe along the whole length of both strips. Once fringed, roll the strips together to create a pompom.

Take a piece of scotch tape and wind the tape around the unfringed end of the pompom. Cut about 1/2" off leaving a short stub at the end of the pompom.

Mark out where you would like the pompom to be placed on the hat and cut a small "x" with a blade.

Apply a small amount of hot glue to the end of the pom pom and insert it into the "x".
Hold it in place for until it dries. Repeat again for the second pompom.

For the metallic pompom top, cut 2"x5" pieces of metallic foil. You can use any color you'd like. Cut 1" deep fringe along the length of the foil. Once fringed, roll the strips together to create a pompom. Take a piece of scotch tape and wind the tape around the unfringed end of the pompom. Apply a small amount of hot glue to the end of the pom pom and insert it into the opening at the tip of the hat. Feel free to add as many or few pompoms on each hat and have fun playing with different pom pom placements to make each hat one of a kind!
