Postcard from CMJ: Selebrities

Oh yes, the CMJ music marathon has taken over New York! We checked in with some of our favorite artists for the occasion.

Selebrities. They're just like us, maybe because they are us! At least, 75% is. Of the band's four members, three are OC 9-to-5'ers. Maybe you've spotted twinsies Josh and Jer Paulin (bass and guitar, respectively) at OCNY, or perhaps you've received an OC Online package lovingly wrapped in tissue paper and OC stickers by Max (drums). On vocals and keyboard is Maria, and together they played a packed show at Le Baron on Wednesday, at the Cascine showcase. Until recently, Selebrities has been a trio accompanied by a pre-recorded bassline, so Josh's debut as its fourth member drew lots of friends and fam from the OC gang. Check the pics from the performance below, and see what Maria, Max, Josh, and Jer had to say about their favorite music videos, spirit animals, and more.

SC: Fill in the blanks: Our band is a ______ and our music is like ______.
Maria Usbeck: Our band is a myth and our music is a story.
Max Peterson: Our band is an outlet for our musical creativity and our music is like the soundtrack to an 80s movie that was never released.
Jer Robert Paulin: Our band is hard work and our music is the pay-off.
Joshua Michael Paulin: Our band is a Bill Cosby and our music is like Jell-O and tapioca pudd'n.

SC: What's your favorite music video?
MU: I have a lot of favorite videos, lately I've been really into China Crisis' "Christian." The set, the lighting, and the visuals are really captivating. Especially the mud-smearing part. I'm sure there are a lot of hidden meanings behind some of the objects in the video that I don't know about. But for me it really captures the feeling of the song.
JRP: Technically this isn't a music video, but Sinead O'Connor's 1992 SNL Performance, when she said, "Fight the real enemy" and tore a picture of the pope in half. I heart that bald-headed BB.
JMP: El Guichino's "Bombay"
MP: I agree with Josh, that El Guincho video is amazing!

SC: Favorite non-musical sound?
MU: Ocean wind
MP: EVERY sound can be musical
JRP: $ CHA-CHING $
JMP: AIRHOOOOOOORRRRRRRRN

SC: What's your spirit animal?
MU: I'd like to say bear, because I love bears. But it's probably more of a penguin.
MP: Roland Orzabal
JRP: KATE UPTON

SC: Do you freak out?
MU: Yes, not too often anymore though. My patience has increased as I've gotten older. So when I'm an old lady, I will be freak-out free.
MP: All the time
JRP: Guilty.

SC: Favorite thing to do when you're not playing music or listening to music?
MU: Eating music. Eating food, actually. I'm a bit of a foodie, and I also love cooking.
MP: Wishing I was doing one of those things
JRP: Daydreaming

SC: What's one thing that you are obsessed with right now?
MP: The DX7 I just bought
MU: The book Flatland by Edwin A. Abbott
JRP: ELIZABETH OLSEN
JMP: KATE UP
