Oh yes, CMJ has taken over New York! We checked in with some of our favorite musical acts for the occasion.
Indians is the moniker of Soren Lokke Juul. Beginning in February 2012, Juul has been busy writing songs, self-releasing a debut single, holding coveted spots opening for bands like Bear in Heaven and Beirut, and generating a lot of buzz in the process. This all lead up to his recent signing to the legendary label 4AD (also home to our friends Gang Gang Dance) and a string of shows at this year's CMJ music marathon. Yesterday, his live show didn't disappoint. Opting to play solo, Indians created a beautiful and hypnotizing sound using layers of echoing organ, piano, and synthesizer, above which his lyrics seemed to float effortlessly. If last night was any indication, this is going to be a big year for Indians.
Chris Puidokas: Fill in the blanks: My band is a _____ and my music is like _____.
Soren Lokke Juul: Fata Morgana; it's real, it's unreal. And my music is an opportunity to go inside yourself looking for dreams and fantasies.
CP: What's your favorite music video?
SLJ: Aphex Twin's "Rubber Johnny" by Chris Cunningham
CP: Favorite non-musical sound?
SLJ: The sound of my manager when he is asleep. Finally, silence!
CP: What's your spirit animal?
SLJ: It's a wolf.
CP: Do you freak out?
SLJ: Not very often, but I don't like people throwing garbage on the street.
CP: Favorite thing to do when you're not playing music or listening to music?
SLJ: I like oceans, so going for a swim is a real treat, especially when it's cold.
CP: What's one thing that you are obsessed with right now?
SLJ: Riding my bike around Copenhagen, with a good track in my ear
CP: What's your desert island disc?
SLJ: Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion, it just has it all.
CP: What are you gonna be for Halloween this year?
SLJ: I think I'll dress up as a moose or Wayne Coyne or a combination of the two.
