For the OC Annual iPad app (download it for free here!) we asked several of the magazine's contributors to go that extra mile and produce unique and interactive content. The gold medal results include an infographic chart-maker by Andrew Kuo, a short film by Terence Koh and Tim Barber, a "Shoot the Noun" arcade game by Carlos Charlie Perez, and an exclusive video by the legendary Bruce Weber. But we couldn't have done this on our own: we asked our Bowery neighbors, Gin Lane Media, to help us on our way. And like all doubles events, we complemented each other perfectly! So, who makes up Gin Lane Media? What are their favorite features of the app ('cause we can't decide!)? And what other projects do they work on? We spoke with the founder, Emmett Shine, last week.
Gillian Tozer: Who and what is Gin Lane Media?
Emmett Shine: Gin Lane is a digital creative agency compromised of just under two-dozen "creative technologists." Basically, we are tight-knit group of designers, developers, content creators, and thinkers who enjoy making creative and fun projects.
GT: What kind of projects does the team work on?
ES: We're currently working on a bunch of interactive in-store applications with fashion brands. The content is original and beautiful, and we're solving some of the efficiency problems retailers face in and out of their stores.
GT: How did the OC Annual project come about?
ES: We were speaking with Rory and Su from Opening Ceremony about finding a way to collaborate together. They felt this would be a great project that played to both of our respective strengths; and it was. They, and everyone at OC were extremely thoughtful and detail-orientated.
GT: How does the OC Annual iPad app support and enhance the magazine?
ES: The OC Annual iPad app is our "thesis statement" on what an editorial experience could be like on a multi-touch device. We love magazines, books, and print—but we also love digital. We wanted to showcase some of the opportunities the medium presents for editorial interaction.
GT: What are some of you favorite features of the app?
ES: I really love that you can view art and content by respected and talented artists and then appropriate it. I think that's special and something I would love to see more of!
GT: Which features were the trickiest to execute?
ES: Leslie David's and Tim Barber/Terence Koh's stories are very processor heavy on the retina-display iPads because you are altering a lot of pixel information. Also, the table of contents user-interface is a bit different, which took a lot of tweaking to get right.
GT: Iphone or Android?
ES: I love the iPhone. It's a powerful and intelligent computer for your pocket.
GT: What is your favorite app on the iPhone?
ES: Probably Instagram, Spotify or something boring like ESPN ScoreCenter. I don't like wacky apps really, maybe Emoji 2.
GT: What would be a dream project for Gin Lane?
ES: We would love to create a fully immersive and interactive experience in a giant space, maybe at a concert or award show. That, and continuing to combine building software and hardware with more physical, tactile results; continuing to get out of the computer and use digital in the real world.
