Mini Martha: Banana, Caramel & Nutella Deep-Fried Wontons

Our resident baker Paris Starn, aka MINI MARTHA, serves up a chocolatey special for Valentine's Day!

I hate Valentine's Day and food blogs on Valentine's Day in particular, where the writers always make desserts to share with significant others. This Valentine's Day, those who are alone should have a yummy dessert to eat too. This recipe is a comforting sweet––it has caramel, Nutella, and bananas, and it's deep-fried. Seriously, what more could someone want in a dessert? I know you probably wouldn’t want to eat something deep-fried, but just for today, you can give in to the temptation. (Also this recipe is super easy.)

Banana, Caramel & Nutella Deep-Fried Wontons

Caramel:
½ cup of sugar
Just under 2 tablespoons of water
½ a cup of heavy cream minus 1 tablespoon
½ a teaspoon of vanilla extract
½ a teaspoon of sea salt

Wontons:
½-1 banana
¼ cup of caramel
1/3rd cup of Nutella
1 egg
Wonton wrappers
Oil (for deep frying)

1. Make the caramel
Put the sugar and water in a heavy-bottomed pot. Turn the heat up to medium and stir the sugar until it dissolves, take out the spoon and place in a candy thermometer. Swirl the pan until the caramel turns a caramel color and reaches 250 degrees. Turn off the stove. Take out the candy thermometer and replace it with a whisk, pour in the heavy cream and vanilla, and whisk until smooth. Add the sea salt and whisk until melted. Place the caramel in a bowl and let cool.

2. Make the wontons
Mash the banana into small pieces, but it shouldn’t be mush. Add in the Nutella and caramel (only use ¼ cup of the caramel made earlier). Stir until combined. Whisk the egg in a separate bowl. Separate the wonton skins and lay flat on a work surface. Use a pastry brush to brush the egg wash onto the edges of a few of the wrappers. Fill each wonton wrapper with a little bit of the filling––no more than a teaspoon. Tightly seal the wrapper. If Nutella comes out of the sides, you are overfilling it. (Make sure to tightly close the wontons, or else they will open during deep frying and the Nutella will go everywhere, ruining the oil). Repeat this with all of the wontons.

Heat at least 2 inches of oil in a pot and place in a candy thermometer. Once the oil reaches 350 degrees, add two wontons at a time. They cook very quickly, so stand over the oil flipping the constantly. Place the wontons when done on a piece of paper towel to drain the oil. Let them sit for a minute and then plate them. You can either drizzle a little caramel on top (which is what I did) or you can dust with powdered sugar. Eat while still hot. Enjoy!

NYFW Goodness: A Pop-Up Restaurant

A decent meal during Fashion Week can be hard to come by. We have our favorite food spots around Lincoln Center and Milk Studios down pat, but sometimes a meal so good comes along that it’s worth stopping our around-the-clock schedules for a moment of gastronomic bliss. Goodness is a new pop-up restaurant that provides just that. Organized by model, philanthropist, and entrepreneur Elettra Wiedemann, the restaurant focuses on a daily-changing menu of locally grown ingredients, curated each time by a different all-star chef. I caught up with Elettra and resident chef Mario Batali to talk about the restaurant, their fashion week plans, and yes––Crocs.

Daria Radlinski: Elettra, what can you tell me about Goodness?

Elettra Wiedemann: Goodness is a pop-up restaurant concept that I started, which pops up around different events. Right now, it’s happening during Fashion Week, but it could be at Art Basel, a film festival, or a music festival. We have a different chef and a different menu every day, and we try to source as much as possible from local food purveyors. So it’s really meant to educate people about the culinary stars in the city––which is why we have Mr. Batali here today––and it’s also meant to be an opportunity for people who are busy at—I call them “luxury conferences,” for lack of a better word—to take time out and nourish themselves with some goodness.

Daria Radlinski: Mario, how did you become involved?
Mario Batali: Elettra called me and said, “How would you like to be involved?” And I said, “Anything you do, I’d be happy to do!"

DR: Very cool. What’s on the menu today?
MB: Today we have an arugula salad, a pumpkin lasagna, a porchetta made out of turkey, and a chestnut flower crêpe filled with lightly sweetened ricotta and candied chestnuts on top.

DR: Sounds amazing.
MB: It’s really good!

DR: Do you change your menu in any way for a Fashion Week crowd?
MB: Italian food in general and the way Italians approach food has always been very light. We've kept it very Italian, which is austere––not a lot of extra stuff––but in fact just seasonal delicious food. I mean, we didn’t bring in any big braised beef or greasy hamburgers. We brought things that are on the lighter side, but that represents our menu really well.

DR: If you could make any changes to the normal chef’s outfit, what would it be?
MB: I would say that they should dress just like I do! [Laughs] The crucial part of understanding a chef is that it’s hot in the kitchen and you have to protect yourself, so you need to wear a long apron. But I would tell everybody to wear short pants and Crocs!

DR: Have you ever been to a fashion show?
MB: No.

DR: Well Elettra, I know that you have! Are you looking forward to any shows this Fashion Week?
EW: After this, I’m running down to see my good friend Prabal’s show, so I’m really excited about that! Then I’ll come back here to have lunch with my mom and my family, and hopefully Mario.

DR: And one last thing––when you guys are running around town in New York, what’s your favorite thing to grab from a bodega/deli?
MB: When I'm on the go, I like a good taco. There are really good tacos happening now–

OC x NYFW: Norma Kamali FW12

Like everything Norma Kamali does, the cut-out models at her presentation this morning were larger than life. A forest of spindly-legged giants, including OC-favorite Hyoni, towered above spectators in oversized-houndstooth dresses, swathes of bejeweled jersey, and skin-tight 80s-inspired sportswear embroidered with empowering statements straight from the guru herself.

Topped with flame-red turbans, Minnie Mouse head bows, and luxe striped furs, the looks ranged from playfully grown-up—grounded with full A-line skirts—to super sexy (like a dangerous black dress with cut-outs running from ankle to arm). Also on show, the new Kamali Kulture collection launched today, offering classic Norma shapes designed for everyday dressing and spending allowances. A video backdrop of sashaying models miming karaoke and doing the Macarena only made us love her more.

Daisy-print cocktail dresses, purple tweed coats, and pastel patent Mary Janes—that's what little Calla girls are made of. For Fall/Winter 2012, her third winter collection, the Paris-based NYC-trained designer created a complete wardrobe for the femme artiste of her imagination. Inspired by the life and surroundings of this woman, the collection features floral printed turtlenecks that peeked out of tweed tailored coats with exaggerated lapels, and silk crepe chemises tucked into slouchy slim-cut pants. Practically perfect in every way.

The men's Assembly NY Fall/Winter 2012 collection is what happens when Neo of The Matrix takes the blue pill, trades in the black trench for a tan one, tops off the look with a leather cap, and says, "Thanks––but no thanks," to the rabbithole. Designer Greg Armas showed a cohesive ensemble of earth-toned, minimalistic, and polished-yet-scruffy looks. Long coats and chunky oversized jackets were thrown over loose tees and sharp-collared shirts, which in turn were paired with slouchy, relaxed-cut pants. Perhaps quiet on the surface, the collection wasn't devoid of Greg's meticulous hand in the construction. Details like a banded seam instead of traditional lining on a blazer (making it easier to layer) attest to the innovative tailoring that goes into his line of versatile, sophisticatedly rough basics that we love.

"A contemporary riviera look with a sports motif running through," is how Yasmin Kianfar describes her Spring/Summer collection of pristine whites and laser-cut dresses. To illustrate, the designer e-mailed us from London with some of the images that inspired her.

So where was Yasmin's head at? Ranging from magazine spreads of paired-down 90s sportswear and paparazzi shots of Lauren Hutton, to vintage photographs of 1920s tennis clubs, the selection is about athletic clothes so elegant that "they were hardly really sporty." Translated into Yasmin's signature mesh and silk, this turns into matching shorts and tops with scalloped edges, racerback jumpsuits, and modern cut-out dresses in sparkling tennis white.

This afternoon we watched as Jeremy Scott "hacked the planet" via the debut of his totally l33t Fall/Winter 2012 collection. I don’t know what excited me more, the Lisa Frank sticker-adorned corset, the Bart Simpson-printed knit sweater, or the Left Eye circa “Aint 2 Proud 2 Beg”-style technicolored mushroom hat. Is there an emoticon for nostalgia? As a member of the first generation to grow up with the Internet, I feel some sense of entitlement when I say that Jeremy owned the cooler fascinations of my youth. However, I do have to say that the AOL dial up tone music that opened the show gave me slight PTSD.

Once again, the casting of über cute boys (Hi, Dudley) made me want to get all “A/S/L?” backstage after the show but, alas, there was work to be done.

Be sure to check in again tomorrow to see how all these looks were put together in our exclusive behind the scenes visit with the show's stylist, Lester Garcia!

Taped to a wall backstage at N.Hoolywood’s FW12 show was a sheet displaying three generations of archetypal gentlemen. A rugged (preferably bearded) soul was the man du jour, slipping perfectly into the 1920s sea captain and soldier characters the collection painted. Short back and sides haircuts, round wire spectacles, and tanned faces added to the story.

Inspiration and styling aside, it was the collection's variety that impressed: bottoms were up for grabs in slim, boot, cargo, and extra loose cuts, cropped to various lengths in tweed, tartan, indigo, and tan. Denim had a hand too, appearing both raw and washed, and sometimes in a patchwork of the two. Outerwear was, as we’ve come to expect, right on point—demonstrating designer Daisuke Obana's ability to create something that is not only functional but super luxurious. And for those nights when you’re allowed off the ship or out of the trenches, have a shave (or not) and slip into one of the collection's perfectly tailored suits.

Last Friday night, visitors at the Andrea Rosen Gallery cracked open the Rolling Rock in celebration of the opening of Cultural Production. The new exhibition features pieces from four conceptual artists, each appropriating different readily available materials, such as popular literature (Allen Ruppersburg’s installation), instructional flowcharts (Alexandre Singh), calendars (Hanne Darboven), or shopping window displays (Josephine Meckseper’s work). The outcome of their collective play with the everyday is a critique of the cultural processes by which fine or high art is generated, categorized, and deemed worthy of display.

Cultural Production runs through March 24, 2012.

It's New York Fashion Week and we’re nearly as excited to find out what’s playing during the shows as we are to see what’s on the catwalks. We asked some OC friends to hit us with their Fall/Winter 2012 show soundtracks.

When Dana Wachs isn't working her day job—traveling the world doing live sound for bands such as MGMT, St. Vincent, and Cat Power—she’s recording and performing under the moniker Vorhees. Recently, she was asked by Rachel Comey to perform a live accompaniment to her Fall/Winter 2012 show (above). I got a chance to speak with Dana about her music, her connection to Rachel Comey, and more, after the jump.

Chris Puidokas: How did you come to play at the Rachel Comey show?
Dana Wachs: I've been friends with Rachel for about 14 years now. I've DJ'd her shows and after-parties, dressed her models, helped pick the live performers, and have assisted with audio production in the past. I secretly hoped she'd ask me to play this season!

CP: How did you start the project Vorhees?
DW: Vorhees was born from my own musical desires to play and experience textural sounds that I was not hearing in music around me. I had a guitar and random effects pedals, plus an EBow I found on the street. I would experiment and try to make the guitar sound less like a guitar and more like a synth, enjoying the strangely organic yet manipulated and processed sounds I conjured. I started playing casually in whatever space I could find, with Sadie Laska (I.U.D./Growing). But then my touring schedule as a sound engineer forced me to become self-reliant. Now I am strictly solo.

CP: Where does the name come from?
DW: Vorhees refers to a town I grew up in that's actually spelled Voorhees. Most people ask me if it has anything to do with Jason Vorhees of Friday the 13th, which is appealing but not the fact of the matter.

CP: Where do you draw inspiration from?
DW: If I was to draw a common thread through all that inspires me, I would say there is space and tension involved. Think Altman's 3 Women, Dan Flavin's light sculptures, and the desert.

CP: When you go from being the sound engineer to the performer, do you feel a greater freedom?

DW: Bands like St. Vincent and MGMT gave me incredible freedom to manipulate their live sound with effects and vocals, and I'm very proud to have supported some phenomenal performances. But performing my own music has its catharsis built in. I also build a lot of improvisation into my live sets; not being responsible for leading anyone else provides me with all the freedom I need to go with my immediate instincts.

CP: How do you start working on a new song?
DW: I experiment with the sounds I can create with my guitar and effects units. I am especially enamored with my Eventide H3000, (popularized by Tony Visconti's use of it on David Bowie's Low) and my new Moog Cluster-Flux pedal. When I get interested in a sound, I start to compose around it. It's an abstract process, really. I wish I could explain it better!

CP: What’s next for you/Vorhees?
DW: I will be recording la

The music from Calla's FW12 presentation was just as pretty as the garments themselves. The music by Olivier Bobin and Yannick Geandjean included Field Music, The Smiths, Caveman (whom we've interviewed in the past), and Suicide (my personal favorite band that also concluded the soundtrack of the Rodarte FW12 show), and it set the perfect atmosphere for the collection.

Alexander Wang's resort bags have squashed any lingering concerns I had about wearing backpacks (namely that people would mistake me for a lost out-of-towner or ask me why my mom wasn't walking me to school). The designer has renewed our much-loved school packs with washed leopard print and electric blue lambskin exteriors finished with clever zip-up straps. Drawing on the palette of his sport-inspired resort ready-to-wear, bright blue and hot coral pink also appear on favorites like the Brenda. Even equipping us with perfect options for toting cameras and iPads, and with more zips and pockets than you could ever ask for, these bags are modern classics.

There's nothing worse than a case of Fashion Week FOMO. But for nightlife hounds like Simonez Wolf, who guards the door at The Standard, it never seems to be a problem. We checked in with him in our lastest DOORMAN DIARY and got the low-down on the best parties, most awesome outfits, and worst flirting attempts he saw this NYFW.

Celebrity it's been really hard not to fan out on as I let them in: Cate Blanchett

Who rolls with the biggest entourage? Lindsay Lohan

Best outfit/article of clothing you've seen on a partygoer this Fashion Week: A vintage YSL tuxedo on a beautiful tall girl.

Best party so far this Fashion Week: The Purple Magazine and BLK DNM party at The Standard, and the Colette Sex Party with Ace Hotel x Araks and Richardson Magazine at Le Baron.

I will never let you into the club if you're: An obnoxious, loud-mouthed, square toe-shoe-wearing beefcake.

I would definitely let you into the club if you're: Sophisticated, polite, and well put-together.

My favorite thing to do during NYFW daylight hours: Eat Middle Eastern food with chef Eddie Huang in Brooklyn.

What is the most ridiculous...

Name someone has dropped: "Andreas Balaszo," Vladimir Putin, and my own name.

Outfit someone has worn: A kimono-meets-Cossack-meets-Harry Potter look with a top hat.

Thing someone has offered to give you if you let them in: Their girlfriend, a black Amex, and once––a Rolex.

Pick-up line you've heard between people on their smoke breaks: Guy: Miss, you dropped something. [Girl looks back]. Guy: My phone number, it's––

Thing someone has said to you after you've denied them: "I'm calling Andreas Balaszo right now so you won't have job tomorrow, you f#$&ing idiot!"

Steve Mono designer Gonzalo Fonseca carefully inspects each of his bags before hand-packing them into the shipping crate to send to OC. "If anything is ever wrong with them, you can blame me!" he said when he dropped by OCNY a few weeks ago. But they're never short of perfect. The Spring/Summer 2012 collection combines supple calfskin with the woven textiles used to make traditional Spanish horse blankets. Nautical striped canvas and block-colored red, white, and blue leather combine on stacks of multi-use pouches that fasten and unfasten with nifty button snaps. Designing with his alter ego—Steve Mono, a Mad Men-era office man—in mind, the designer provides iPad cases, phone covers, totes, and ingenious 4-in-1 clutches for the modern-day Don and Peggy (after she got glamorous).
