Rubi in the Rough: Alia's Fun House

Paris-based PHOTOGRAPHER, foodie, and OC blog correspondent DANIELLE RUBI is always on the move. This time, her travels take her to her native sunny California, where she hung with actors Alia Shawkat, Michael Cera, and Sarah Ramos.

Being away from Paris, I've been doing a lot of creative projects with talented, sweet, and fun folks while enjoying the winter California sun. When my husband Adrian got a furniture commission from our friend, the artist and actress Alia Shawkat, we posted up at her beautiful Beachwood Canyon 1920s home for a few days, and every moment was golden and hilarious.

Alia is well-known for her role as Maeby Fünke on the Emmy-winning show Arrested Development, as well as for being in films like Whip It and Cedar Rapids. Also an artist, she will be in an upcoming spring show at Brachfeld Gallery in Paris, where she'll be exhibiting her paintings and drawings. Oh, and she sings too! Like a real old-fashioned starlet.

At Alia's, I did a photo shoot with her and her friend, Sarah Ramos. Sarah plays Haddie Braverman on the TV series Parenthood, and she has also co-directed and co-written a smart and funny short film, The Arm, that recently screened at Sundance. To set things off, we set up an art-making situation with some canned foam insulation and spray paint to play with. The results were somewhere between ice cream-inspired sculptures and oversized marshmallow-esque Silly String. Fun and weird.

From there, we flowed into dress-up time. Alia and Sarah disappeared and came out in fantastic dresses from Alia's closet. At that moment, I knew that the girls would be incredible to photograph. Alia will pull out a gag from her purse at any moment––a mask off a shelf or a vintage hand puppet from her mantle––and Sarah will burst into song and dance in the middle of a conversation. So much energy and spontaneity. YES.

Michael Cera was over at the house, too. He dropped by to assist Adrian in the temporary workshop set up in Alia's garage. He and Alia have been dear friends since they worked together on Arrested Development. We ourselves had met Michael through Leslie Feist when she was recording her latest album, Metals, in Paris.

After our time in LA, we hit the open road to Marfa, Texas. More coming on that soon...

Raise those spirit fingers for Taryn Multack (aka Miss LadyFinger), our new beauty contributor! Taryn will be blogging some of the most magical manicures in the gameall inspired by her favorite pieces at OC.

I am so excited to be a new OC Blog contributor! There are so many stellar products to choose from that it was to hard pick my first inspiration! However, I love the erratic marbling on the PROENZA SCHOULER BLOCKED PLEATED FULL SKIRT.

To recreate this look, you will need:
1 paper plate
1 straw
Matte white polish, I used Brilliant White by CND
Bright orange polish, I used Papaya Punch by China Glaze
Black polish, I used Chelsea by Nails Inc.

Follow my step-by-step instructions, and you'll have Proenza on your nails in no time. More manis to follow!

PROENZA SCHOULER BLOCKED PLEATED FULL SKIRT in grey
1. Protect your hands from splatter by applying olive oil generously around your nails with a Q-tip (you can also use Scotch tape) 2. Paint a base coat of matte white.

3. While the white polish dries, cut a straw in half. 4. Pour a smallish drop of the orange polish onto your plate. 5. Dip your straw into the polish and then blow with force onto your nail.

6. Cut the orange residue off the straw and repeat steps 4 and 5 using the black polish.

7. When dry, paint a thick orange line along the tip of your nail. 8. Top it off with Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat, and voilà!

Ty-lör Boring Pops Up in Nolita

$

I love the word cheftestant! Of course, this word only exists in the crazy dialect of Top Chef—a world Missouri-native Ty-lör Boring (real name) knows all too well, thanks to a successful stint as a competitor on the series. Fresh off the show, Ty-lör is about to open his first pop-up restaurant in Nolita, and has the intention to open a Kansas City barbecue restaurant around the city in the not too distant future.

Gilian Tozer: Let’s begin by speaking about the City Grit pop-up restaurant you’re opening on Monday.

Ty-lör Boring: Yes! So, we’re opening the pop-up in the old St. Patrick’s schoolhouse in Nolita. It will be open from February 6th until the 11th. The event is called TBD, which could stand for Ty-lör Boring Dinners—what what?!—but also, To Be Determined. This is the first chapter in my post-Top Chef career, so it’s a great opportunity for people to experience my cuisine. I’ve been in New York for five years but have never been able to cook my own food, so I’m really excited!

GT: So what does the menu look like at this point?
TB: Someone described it as a Pacific-Northwest-Asian-French kind of affair. My style of cooking is very seasonal and regional, influenced by many years on the west coast. I believe that the ingredients closest to us taste the best, so a lot of the menu is an homage to what’s available in late winter: hearty greens, winter radishes, and wood ear mushrooms.

There’s an amuse-bouche, four courses, and then for dessert I’ve created a little something you can take home with you. I wanted to make the menu light and clean, showcasing a lot of the flavors and ideas that I had on Top Chef. I haven’t actually told anyone this yet, but the amuse-bouche will be one of my award-winning dishes from the show.

GT: I just realized how hungry I was. So let’s step back in time, how did you become a chef?
TB: I started cooking 19 years ago, flipping hamburgers on my 16th birthday at the local Sonic drive-in in Raytown, Missouri—a really small town of 35,000 people.

GT: Quintessential Americana vibes?
TB: Yeah, über-classic Americana, like heart of America: think pick-up trucks with shotguns in the back. Since that time I’ve had a lifelong love of food; I was raised by a Japanese nanny who cooked Japanese-style pub food, which had a huge influence on me. Kansas City barbecue has also had a huge effect on me.

GT: Tell me more about Kansas City barbecue, Lyndsy was telling me about it just before we got here.
TB: Kansas City barbecue is when you slow cook the meat for a long time, 13-16 hours at least. The meat is usually dry-rubbed with a spice blend and cooked in a specially-built small brick room, with a smoldering fire of live oak. Eventually the meat turns black but not because it’s burnt, it’s actually just the caramelization process. It evokes a lot of sweet and spicy scents.

GT: Sounds really sexy.
TB: It is very sexy! But you asked about how I got cooking: I’ve traveled to 16 countries on four continents, gone to school both in Europe and in the US, and apprenticed everywhere.

GT: Where did you study?
TB: At the Seattle Central Community College. I also won a fellowship to attend the finest chocolate and pastry school in the world, a school called Lenôtre, just outside of Versailles.

GT: Total polar opposites!
TB: My firm belief is, whether you spend $5 or $50,000, you get what you put into things. I got a lot out of community college. The school i

Argentinean Slang Dictionary - 'Tipo'

Stuck in Argentina with nothing but a couple of "Where's the nearest restroom, please" phrases in your vocabulary? Our Argentinean Slang Book is here to save your trip.

Tipo, a noun used in Argentina and many Spanish-speaking countries, translates literally into "type." When used in slang however, it can have the same function as the word "like" in English (interspersed in speech). Example: La fiesta empieza tarde, tipo, a las cuatro. (The party starts late, at like, four.) It can also be used to mean "guy." As in: Ese tipo es un poco raro. (That guy is a little weird.)

Hear Ye, Hear Ye: Sweet Lullatone

$

Lullatone makes the magical kind of music that inspires you to lay in the grass barefoot with a makeshift rubber band guitar and play Philip Glass. With the tagline "minimalism is cute!" they weave together mesmerizing pop songs using unusual instruments and sounds, including toy drums, ukuleles, and computer-generated sine tones. In addition, they design music for an assortment of companies, like fellow OC collaborators Target and Levi's, and the MoMA. Shawn James Seymour and Yoshimi Tomida, the duo that makes up Lullatone, were kind enough to let us pick their brains on their influences and give us a glimpse into their world, which is as fun as their music.
______________________________________________________

Patrick Wilson: Your music really captures the often overlooked magic of daily life. What everyday things excite you the most and inspire your songs?
Shawn James Seymour: So many things! Riding bicycles, grass stains, spinning in circles, graph paper, nice handwriting, English as a second language... I could go on and on!

PW: Your music has a very cute, child-like quality to it. Yet it certainly isn't just enjoyable for kids. Do you have an audience in mind while you are writing and recording your music?
SJS: Yes. I once read an article about marketing for bands and I found out that we needed to "pinpoint our demographic." I think I came up with the following: people who like white space in design, people who like construction paper, and people who like other people.

PW: Minimalism also plays a big role in your music and design aesthetic.
SJS: We always hope to show that minimalism doesn't have to be stark and cold. Someone recently commented "sunny minimalism" on a photo of our studio. Isn't that a great description? Isn't the Internet awesome for letting people share nice thoughts with you?

PW: Who are some of your favorite designers and composers?
SJS: Bruno Munari, for incorporating playfulness into everything he touched; Dick Bruna, for limiting himself to eight colors and making it work; and Charles and Ray Eames, for putting their own touch on every medium they encountered.

PW: Your first album, Computer Recital (2003), was recorded almost entirely using sine tones. Since then, you've adopted an array of instruments for your recordings, from ukuleles and glockenspiels to splashes and snores. What is your instrument collection like?
SJS: For three years we were on TV every week here in Nagoya, teaching children how to build instruments from things around the house (see the video). So we have a big collection of rubber band guitars, aluminium foil kazoos, balloon bongos, and more. We tend to sneak little bits of those sounds onto our albums too, adding texture behind the real instruments.

PW: What, if anything, do you consider your main instrument?
SJS: Brian Eno famously said that musicians need to treat the studio as an instrument. Since our studio is in our house, and a lot of our tracks have a strong domestic feel, I guess our house is our best instrument!

PW: I've spent hours playing your Raindrop Melody Maker game. Where did the idea came from?
SJS: I first

Patchouli, Patchwork, and Psychedelia: Proenza Schouler Resort

For Resort 2012, Proenza Schouler's Jack and Lazaro get crafty. Macrame, patchwork, marbling, and tie-dye! If you haven't thought about these since the art barn at summer camp, it's time to reacquaint yourself! Start with the turquoise and burnt orange weave on the macrame wedge sandals, then check out the trippy marbled swirls on the collection's long-sleeve t-shirts and exquisite pleated skirt.

Picking up where Fall/Winter left off, the collection continues the designers' mind-altering road trip, moving from Santa Fe to San Francisco. Swapping out last season’s Navajo prints for feminine florals and sheer cotton silks, the mood has mellowed, and it's time for patchouli, patchwork, and psychedelia. With tiered floor-length dresses and floating layers of mesh, this collection is all about setting your spirit free!

Julia Willinger of XL Recordings is a New York-based music writer.

Believe it or not, but the epicenter of hot music as of late is neither in our Bushwick backyard nor perching in the hills of Echo Park. Of course there are a plethora of bands we can see every night in the ‘burg or Silver Lake, but everything worth obsessing over recently is found in…CANADA. There, I said it. A proud American raised in New Jersey, I am crushing on all things coming out of Canada. Take a fledgling Arcade Fire or Drizzy Drake, mix it with some government funding, and voilà! Parliament and music cultures have collided to create some of today’s best tunes.

Although there are so many to name, the focus must be put on The Weeknd, Grimes, and Purity Ring. From the get-go, The Weeknd has had support from the OVO crew (aka Drake’s team, which The Weeknd's Abel Tesfaye is a part of). Tesfaye, a Toronto native, released the mixtape House of Balloons in 2011 that literally shook the Internet alive, leaving everyone wondering, who is The Weeknd? With more to come in 2012, the upcoming year will hopefully reveal more about this secretive and amazing artist.

Fresh out of French-speaking Canada, Montreal’s Grimes (aka Claire Boucher) just announced her signing to 4AD, home to Cocteau Twins, Ariel Pink, Gang Gang Dance, and many more. Grimes attention started after she released her video for “Vanessa”, which debuted the adorable singer surrounded by other females dancing and singing in a tribal-like fashion. There was something about it so beautiful and pop––yet unsettling and harrowing at the same time––that music bloggers fell in love immediately! She is a one-woman act, belting out a youthful voice mixed with Mariah Carey falsetto, all while sampling and mixing her music live. Every show, she changes her hair color and outfit, but her combat boots and humble persona remain the same. Grimes is sort of like a fairy on mushrooms. Her new album, Visions, will be released on February 21st.

Last but not least comes Edmonton’s male/female duo Purity Ring. In 2011, the band released "Ungirthed”, a song that mixed dance beats and hip-hop samples in a way the music blog zone hadn't heard before. Having followed up with two more songs since, the group keeps the hits coming and leaves us salivating for more. Their live show can easily be compared to Fever Ray's, with a stage that's mainly black with the exception of minimal props giving off light. Corin Roddick, half the band (with fellow member Megan James), plays his equipment and instruments with intensity, stirring up nervous excitement. Megan sings ambient tunes and sways as if hypnotized by the production, while occasionally banging a gargantuan gong. No word yet on what is coming next, but only greatness in sight.
Clockwise from top: Grimes, Drake, The Weeknd, and Purity Ring

Reaching Those High Highs in the LES

In anticipation of their first LP, due out in late spring, the Brooklyn-based band High Highs performed to a tightly-packed crowd last night at Pianos. The setting was intimate and cozy, which is kinda how I would describe their sound—warm layers of harmonies, bouncy drum beats, and comforting synth chords. I think the band's keyboardist/singer, Oli, summed up their sound best when he described it as "like taking a warm bath." Whatever the adjectives, it was a fun gig, and I even spotted some familiar faces in the tight crowd. Check out my bootleg video from the gig, the official video for their EP "Open Season" below, and High Highs' Bandcamp here.

The High Highs will perform at Pianos again on February 15th and 29th.

Yesterday was Groundhog Day, and furry oracle Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his hole, saw his shadow, and left us with six more weeks of winter. But because it was 60 degrees in New York on Wednesday, and because Phil will clearly just say whatever the men in suits want him to, we're placing our faith in Staten Island Chuck, who predicted an early spring this year.

Here are some of OC's most floral, colorful, and spring-like pieces to get you buzzed for the next six weeks of sunshine. Enjoy tulip-hemmed skirts from Mugler, zesty lemon silk from OC Resort, and a hot pink blanket picked fresh from Argentina and ready for a picnic.

Merging choreography and improvisation, Sophia Cleary's brother sister lover claimed the itinerant WoRKSHOP space last night, up on the Bowery. Sophia, along with artist Joseph Teeling, got unreservedly physical to a soundtrack that ranged from "Sure Thing" by Miguel and "As Long As He Needs Me" by Judy Garland, to ear-numbing white noise. Together they built a relationship through movement, each sequence conditioned by a particular genre of music. Crunking, jumping, grinding, hugging, pushing, and rolling (over each other)—they had all the right moves.

New Kids on the Block: The Smile To Go

On Monday, New York entrepreneurs Matt Kliegman and Carlos Quirarte flung open the doors to The Smile To Go. The little sister of the cozy Bond Street restaurant The Smile, this new spot is set on kicking take-out food up a notch in a city where it's lacking. With co-owner and executive chef Melia Marden and Brenna White (formerly of M.Wells) whipping up the pastries, Matt and Carlos, who also run the show at the Jane Hotel Ballroom and own The Westway, get it right once again, but this time, they're right across the street from OC. Thrilled to have dishes like roasted butternut squash with blood orange and dandelion greens at our doorstep, I sat down with the boys to talk about how they got their starts and more.

Sofia Cavallo: Is the difference between The Smile and The Smile To Go just the tupperware?
Matt Kliegman: Well, we've had The Smile for three years now––this month is actually our anniversary–– and we wanted to get more into catering. The Smile has catered a lot of different events, so we're bringing back some of those dishes but also expanding them. Also, this kitchen is definitely The Smile 2.0. There's no gas there, it's all electric. So this is a real kitchen.
Carlos Quirarte: Yeah, the kitchen there is probably as big as these two tables combined [laughs]. We're hoping to use this space as an expanded kitchen.

SC: What made you guys choose this location?
MK: There's a youthful, exciting energy here. Walking down Crosby Street is really lovely––it's a nice little nook in Soho.
CQ: Actually, we found out recently that there used to be a bar at 2 Howard Street in the 1850s called The Smile.
MK: Oh yeah, so bizarre. Our architect happened to do a Google search and found an archive article from The New York Times. Some guy was arrested there in 1854 for using a fake Spanish quarter.

SC: That's nuts. I've also heard that Howard Street was one of the last streets in New York to get street lights. Apparently, the mob would come down to dump dead bodies––no one wanted to be down here.
CQ: Yeah, I remember hearing that story from Carol [Lim], Olivia [Kim], and Humberto [Leon] ten years ago when Opening Ceremony first opened and they had a party in the store space, with nothing there except Pabst Blue Ribbon and a garbage can.
MK: Even this building has a history––Carol actually used to live here. I like to refer to the landlord as a modern-day Medici, supporting young creative people. There's not only Carol but also Rogan Gregory of Rogan and the Surface to Air guys, too.

SC: It seems like all of the locations you choose have a backstory. For example, Melia's parents––the artists Brice and Helen Marden––used to live right above The Smile in the 70s, and The Westway is a former strip joint.
CQ: The Jane Hotel also has a history, it's been around since 1908, and once housed Titanic survivors. Its architects actually also designed the main building at Ellis Island.
MK: Yeah, the hotel's story is kind of strange. It was built by this wealthy woman to give sailors a place to go and hang out and do what sailors do.
CQ: But they weren't allowed to have sex or drink there––there was a priest on-site.

SC: That's incredible. Can you tell us about these Hanna Liden photographs on the wall?
CQ:

Best gift you’ve ever given? I told my mom I couldn't come home for Easter but then drove from California to Arizona and showed up next to her at church. She cried.

Best gift you’ve ever received? My boss at the hair salon Mudhoney bought me these sick lizard and ostrich-skin cowboy boots for Christmas.

What is something that everyone should try at least once?
Stop being scared and go for what you really want.

If you weren't a model what would you be doing? I'm a hairstylist, so whether I'm modeling or not, hair is my true calling.

Favorite place to go to escape the city: I love to go back home to the desert.

Best friend you've found in the industry: I don't really know. I guess my homies Jay H and Dan Felton.

You're on a deserted island––5 necessities?
A water purifier, a crate of freeze-dried meals, a tent, flares, and a Game Boy.

What would you choose as your last meal on earth? It would probably be ribs, lobster tail, a steak, potatoes, and a two-liter bottle of Coke.

What's your spirit animal? A jackalope.
