Bites on a Budget: $8.75 at Little Muenster

BITES ON A BUDGET is a toothsome and tasty series where members of the OC family forage for great food––under $10!

The Lower East Side's LITTLE MUENSTER specializes in "super fancy cheese sandwiches". The words fancy and cheese in the same sentence? Major turn on. As my fellow intern and grilled cheese enthusiast Rachel and I would discover, this is the place to go when you crave good ol' comfort food for the sophisticated palate.

A-mazing cheeses (which range from classic white American singles to Stilton) are paired with ingredients like candied ginger, pear purée, and sage brown butter. Rachel ordered the gruyère, chèvre, leek confit, and pancetta on French sourdough ($8.75) while I got the muenster with porcini and shiitake mushrooms on peasant bread ($9). Both our grilled perfections came with a complementary side of homemade crisps. There's also the option of adding bone marrow butter on your sandwich for an extra $1... Oh you fancy, huh?

Get Yo Nails Did!

Rachelyn Remz-Porter of DOUBLE TROUBLE reports from the manicure frontline! 

My nail maven Maria, from Ria Nailz in Greenpoint, can translate just about anything onto your nails. Here, our friend Alexis (of SLEIGH BELLS) gets all starry-nailed with Maria's Milky Way manicure. To recreate her genius, you will need: tweezers, a toothpick, a makeup sponge, base coat and top coat, nail polish pens in silver and white, and nail polish in black, white, yellow, pink and blue sparkle. 

Instructions:
1. Clean nails with acetone.
2. Coat nails with clear base coat.
3. Paint nails black.
4. Cut a small piece of makeup sponge. Using the sponge and some tweezers, dab white polish diagonally across the center of the nail creating a "Milky Way" effect.
5. Repeat this with each color starting with yellow, then pink, and then blue.
6. Using the toothpick, dab small white dots in clusters around the milky way.
7. Use the silver pen to make bigger "stars" on the nail.
8. Cover with top coat.

Getting Down: ISAORA FW11

Until recently, I'd never worn a down jacket. Why had no one told me it's like wearing a comforter outside? These ones by ISAORA are warm enough to make you get out of bed, pause Netflix, and say no to ordering food from the place that you can see from your building.

Beyond the comfort factor, they're very easy on the eye. Designers Ricky Hendry and Marc Daniels have come up with a way to color down without flattening all the goose fluff. Dipping the jackets in cold dye, after they've been assembled, gives a weathered effect where the liquid pools in nooks and creases, and it means they can get colors as out-there as the electric blue on the ignetic blue down jacket. 

Besides down, ISAORA has you covered with their "thermal program", which is as serious as it sounds. Inspired by mid-century military underwear, thermal pants and onesies come in the softest of soft merino wools. For Snuggy-level warmth, performance materials, and a vintage snowboarder feel, these can't be beat.

Just Eat It: No. 7 Sub Breakfast Sandwiches

Did you know OC at Ace's next-door neighbors, No. 7 Sub, have a breakfast menu too? Their early morning subs are a much better alternative to the plain ol' donut and coffee.

The General Tso's soft-boiled fried egg sandwich (my favorite) takes a little bit longer to make than the other sandwiches, since they deep fry the eggs after soft-boiling them. But it's well worth the wait. The crispy fried eggs then get tossed in a special sauce before they're laid open-faced on toasted bread, and topped off with thinly sliced pickes, mayo, and arugula.

The broccoli, egg & cheese (Diane's fave) is slathered with the perfect pesto sauce. And the kielbasa sandwich (another masterpiece) is made with thickly cut slices of sausage. Each of the sandwiches goes through the toaster conveyor belt. The best part is that all the subs are only $5 or less!

Sunrise to Twilight: Rodarte FW11

Wheat prints, Amish quilting, and colors that glow like a dawn sky: presenting Rodarte Fall/Winter 2011, shot by Tim Barber and featuring the beguiling Cody Young.

Where in previous seasons Kate and Laura have referenced the landscape of their native California, for fall, they look to the Great Plains, the transition from dawn to twilight, and—never ones to miss a movie—Days of Heaven and The Wizard of Oz. Full skirts and high necks come in homestead patterns and textured guipure lace, evoking a Judy Garland silhouette, while floor-length gowns imitate the prairie itself, in billowing expanses of periwinkle and maize.

Showpieces include a pale yellow silk gown with a wheat field print and sparkling dew drop SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS, and breathtaking boucle wool coats left open from bust to floor to kick out for inimitable Rodarte drama.

Curt Camerucci aka our Welcome Stranger model, aka one half of the DJ duo Flosstradamus, says of his music career, “We make people dance at the party, in the club, in the car, at your house, in your undies, and so on”, and who could be mad at that? This well-intentioned DJ also has super cute style—just check out the sambas and gold chain he showed up to our shoot wearing. I have a feeling that’s why Kierra of Welcome Stranger hand-picked him to model their collection for us! Get to know a little more about Curt in our interview.

How did you and Kierra first meet?
We met in LA when I was on tour with Chromeo in 2007. I had just started dating my girlfriend, who is best friends with her, and we had heard so much about each other we had to meet.

What’s something about Kierra that no one would expect?
She is the best house guest! Twelve ply toilet paper when we run out type o' gal.

What is something about you that no one would expect?

I was raised in the flea market circuit. I helped my parents sell other people's stuff for a good chunk of my life.

What was the easiest or hardest thing about modeling for Opening Ceremony?
The easiest thing was everyone at OC, they made me feel really comfortable and coached me through the whole process.

When I'm not modeling I'm _____:   

Producing music, DJing, and making apps.

Where's the coolest or strangest place you've ever been to DJ?
We played in a tree fort at a hippy rave in Canada. That section of the festival was called the Ewok Village.

Favorite people to DJ with:

My DJ partner Josh Young, aka Young Josh, aka j2k

Essential photo shoot song?
Anything featuring Roscoe Dash. That dude gets me hype!

Most prized possession?
My computer (N3rd alert).

Best gift you’ve ever received?
I received a giant novelty check for my birthday this past year. Sweepstakes style. Pretty awesome!

What is something that everyone should try at least once?
Riding a moped. It's crack on wheels I tell ya!


If you weren't a DJ what would you be doing?

Graphic/web design. That's what my degree is in. I'm very fortunate to be able to do what I do. I'm just happy to be doing something creative.

What's the most played song on your iPod?
Currently "Jacy" by Supreme Cuts.

Favorite place to go to escape the city:
I went to Vermont a bunch last winter.
